I want to be a cowboy.
I think it would be fun.
I’d get to ride a big horse.
I’d get to tote a gun.
I’d get to wear a big hat.
I’d buy one that is black,
and there’d be a leather vest
covering my back.
I’d spend my days relaxing,
just riding on my horse.
I’d look just like a hero
and act like one, of course.
But this will never happen.
There is no way, no how.
The trouble is I’m terrified
of each and every cow.
This poem was inspired by a post written by Herb Thiel on his terrific blog, “The Haps With Herb”, as well as by Herb’s black cowboy hat.
Now this kid has me worried: why did he choose a BLACK HAT? Is he a villain-in-the-making, or what?

He’ll be just fine if he’s like Herb. 😊

I am so honored I’m speechless and that’s not easy to get from me. Thank you. Which post was it? I think I might know. Was it Curly?

I’m glad you like the poem! I can’t remember exactly which post it was that inspired the poem, but as I read it, the first line of the poem popped into my head, and I wrote the rest a day or so after. The hat had to be black because of your hat. I always like reading your posts. 😊

Hi AJ! Do you mind if I reprint this poem on my writer’s blog, WordDreams (https://worddreams.wordpress.com)? I will definitely link back to both you and Herb. I love Westerns and this poem is great. Right now, I have it scheduled for January 18thish but these things do get moved.
Thank you for your consideration!

Thank you so much. I will try to tell you if that date slips, but I’m not terribly reliable (sigh–ask my husband; he’ll agree).
